Contradictory Relationship between Hurst Parameter and Queueing Performance

چکیده
Long Range Dependent LRD network tra c does not behave like the tra c generated by the Poisson model or other Markovian models The main di er ence is that LRD tra c increases queueing delays due to the burstiness of the tra c over many time scales LRD tra c has been measured in di erent types and sizes of networks for di erent applications eg WWW and di erent tra c aggregations Since LRD behaviour is not rare nor isolated accurate characterization of LRD tra c is very important in order to predict performance and to allocate network resources The Hurst parameter is used to describe the degree of LRD and the burstiness of the tra c In this paper we analyze UCLA Computer Science Department network tra c traces and compute their Hurst parameters Queueing simulation is used to study the impact of LRD and to determine if the Hurst parameter accurately describes such LRD Our results show that the Hurst parameter is not by itself an accurate predictor of the queueing performance for a given LRD tra c trace

Contradictory relationship between Hurst parameter and queueing performance (extended version)
Long Range Dependent (LRD) network tra c does not behave like the tra c generated by the Poisson model or other Markovian models. From the network performance point of view, the main di erence is that LRD tra c increases queueing delays due to its burstiness over many time scales. LRD behavior has been observed in di erent types and sizes of networks, for di erent applications (eg. WWW) and di ...
متن کاملPoint Process Models for Self - Similar 1
Self-similar processes based on fractal point processes (FPPs) provide natural and attractive network traac models. We show that the point process formulation yields a wide range of FPPs which in turn yield a diversity of parsimonious, computationally eecient, and highly practical asymptotic second-order self-similar processes. Using this framework, we show that the relevant second-order fracta...

متن کاملWavelet-Based Resource Allocation in ATM Networks
In recent years, numerous publications have identi ed a high number of tra c sources to be of self-similar nature. Such tra c can have a negative impact on traditional queuing systems. This paper presents a call admission control algorithm that uses periodic wavelet analysis applied to tra c measurements to estimate the amount of resources necessary to support a certain set of connections under...
متن کاملNon-asymptotic performance evaluation and sampling-based parameter estimation for communication networks with long memory traffic
Modern communication networks have become a constituent part of daily life applications. Since the design of ARPANET, which is the predecessor of the Internet, a key research focus lies on modelling and performance evaluation of communication networks. Established performance measures include quality of service (QoS) metrics known from queueing theory, e.g., the mean queue length or mean latenc...
